Post by Boomer 16/03/09 @ 11:46:01 » Why is it the employers do not train people. The impending skill shortage won't vanish until employers train people.
Having paid many times for training including university only to be rejected for employment has made me no longer willing to spend any of my money on training in the hope an employer will employ me.
Or are you just going to import workers into Australia who sent the wages back to their country which is great for our economy. Or better still lets just send the jobs to India and not worry about the future of Australian workers or industry.

You can spend thousands of dollars training them only to have them leave and move on. It can take many hours of paid time to become fluent with something and then the employee gets a better job as a result of the training or consequently wants more money.
Much the same as painting a rental property then the landlord increases the rent. it should be a two way street where each party gets to benefit from the experience. For every bad experience it costs. In the economic conditions at the moment bad employees become a very big liability. » Re:Why is it the employers do not train people. Interesting subject, Some employers have extensive training but sub human working conditions. One employer I worked for had 5 months training followed by the employee being moved around the state at little or no notice, no living away from home allowance, no help finding accommodation, no removalist allowance and no travelling allowance except for the train fare, the employee funds everything themselves on their own. Its not hard to understand why I left that job. I could not get a lease on a flat because I did not know where I would be in the short term future. I would have been stuck living in caravan parks on a day to day basis.Very expensive if you are there short term.
On another note, many years ago the government through the CES (Commonwealth Employment Service) had a training allowance where employers would be paid $3000 over 6 months to employ people who were unemployed for 12 months or longer. Some unscrupulous employers like Surfside Buslines and some others would take advantage of this allowance and employ long term unemployed people and sack them when the training allowance expires six months later, Then they would get another person with another training allowance and do it again and again and again and again and again. Its not hard to see why the Government stopped this allowance. » Re:Why is it the employers do not train people. The only reason that people leave a job is because of bad or illegal working conditions (see my post above) and or they find a job where the pay or working conditions are better.
